In LOVING MEMORY

Maria

was a loving mother, daughter, sister, cousin, niece and friend. She was an amazing Registered Nurse who cared for others in their darkest days (and hers too). She was a frequent traveler who did not let breast cancer slow her down, before or after her diagnosis.

While she was waiting to get the results of her initial biopsy, she did the one thing she always did: she hopped on a plane and enjoyed life! She attended Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago, she ate roti on the beach and danced the night away to soca. She came home ready to hear her results and fight the battle ahead! Travel helped her cope.

Her infectious laugh is truly missed and she has left an everlasting impact on everyone, from the Cameroonian community to her travel crew to her Zumba dance family.

MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDERS

Death of a loved one changes one forever. We lost a sister, confidant, best friend. There’s grief. sadness. guilt. Why did her 30s end with a breast cancer diagnosis? What could we have done earlier? Why was it so aggressive?

But then there is a time of reflection, research and action. Maria’s diagnosis, journey, and her ultimate death was not some isolated occurence in our community. Something became clear: Breast cancer is a silent killer in the Black community and across the African diaspora. The racial disparities are frightening and Black women need support.

We decided to create Fight Through Flights because it was rooted in our favorite shared moments with Maria. Traveling the world helped us create our family memories together, but it also provided the support Maria needed after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Travel has helped us cope, recharge, and simply treasure life as we know it. We hope these free retreats and travel experiences can help our Black sisters reclaim a piece of themselves that has been stripped away.

We know that is not enough. Breast cancer can change you emotionally, physically, spiritually, and mentally. So we have complemented some of our programs with free mental health, personal fitness training, and nutrition sessions. But then there is an extra layer, accessibility to professionals you trust and who you feel comfortable with and who might just look like you.

It takes more than treatment to fight this and we are here to support. We hope you will join us. No one fights alone!
